We are a New England couple living in Maine and are here to share our love for the Yorkshire Terrier breed with you. Our "Taylor Made" puppies have great bloodlines, are AKC registered and are bred to be within the Yorkshire Terrier 'standard'.

EIGHT WEEKS OLD TOMORROW

I got up this morning only to find these little monsters outside their pen. I let them play for quite awhile with the big dogs. So far they are all getting along fine and Delia just loves the babies. I snapped these photos right after I put them back in. Every day they look different, act different and get more and more adorable. Enjoy,.... HOlly

PUPPIES AT PLAY
Hi everyone, I just started letting the pups out to play in the office when I am in there..........It is such a "hoot" to watch them romping, running, jumping........ There was a little styrofoam plate in here and one of them found it........as you can see, she is proudly prancing around with it and everyone else wants it. It's amazing to me how much they have changed in just 7 weeks. Today I will take them up to meet Dr Hutchins for their first shots and exam. I plan to be there for an hour, as the staff just love to see the new puppies and to play with them.Girl 1 is the talkative one........every day when I talk to them she is the one who yipps and barks at me ...jumping with her little front feet. Girl 2 & 3 have similar personalities........both of them take a minute to warm up and then they are the fiesty two...grabbing toys and trying to attack mom, my feet and anything else they can get their little mouths on.........and girl 4 is monkey-see-monkey-do....mocking all the others and letting out the cutest growl to let everyone know she is there too. They are just so darn adorable!!! For the two families that will be new moms/dads......you are very lucky as I have literally recieved a hundred calls on these pups. Have a great day!! Holly

Once in a while you just happen to get a photo that makes you smile. I took this picture today, and literally it looks like Jazzy is giving a huggy, huggy to her baby. The girls were 6 weeks old yesterday..............wow, it just not seem possible and the time has flown by. They are all doing great and are cute as little buttons!! Enjoy! HollyYORKSHIRE TERRIERS, NUMBER 2 IN NATION

ABBIE AND GRADY SITTING HAPPILY..........
Here are the expecting parents............Abbie is due around the 25th of March. We are currently accepting deposits on her babies. She is doing well and has quite the belly going already! Abbie is a very quiet and loving dog. She is a full sister to Delia, but they both have different looks. Pictures really do not do her justice. She has a beautiful teddy bear type look to her and she has excellent champion bloodlines. She should have some beautiful babies. If you have any questions feel free to call me. Holly
FYI - LUXATING PATELLA (kneecap)
Today I want to talk about Luxating Patella's in Yorkies.
The kneecap in your dog is on the rear legs up near the hip area. It is not at the "bend" in rear legs. This kneecap is attached by a groove in the bone. Yorkies have very small bone structures and it can easily pop out. The slipping of the kneecap is a common problem in toy breeds and can be slight to severe. Your veterinarian can rate the "slippage" in grades 1-4, with 4 most likely needing surgery due to pain issues.
Dog with luxating patellas often will look like they are skipping or hopping. Your dog may limp or not walk on their hind leg due to the pain related to the slippage. Surgery is usually recommended for Grades 3 & 4.
Is luxating patellas hereditary? There is allot of controversy on this issue. Patella issues can arise from a pup who jumps off from furniture or repeatedly jumps on their back legs at a young age. It can be a result of a fall or trauma to the leg as well. I read recently that 87% of toy breeds have luxating patellas and that they are very common. A grade 1 or 2 is usually not serious and your dog can live a healthful and happy life and it will not affect their quality of life. Luxating patellas are not considered a lifethreatening heredity or congential defect by most breeders.
Did you find this helpful? let me know.......... Holly

BORN SILVER
It's funny how people find you!! In my "Did You Know "section I have a tiny bit of information regarding how yorkie babies are supposed to be born black and tan/gold and I mention silvers and chocolates. This gal just had a litter of 5 babies born about 9 days ago and one little boy was born silver. She was trying to find out why and what it meant. She has given me permission to use the pictures she sent me, however I have agreed not to disclose her name or where she is from. I will tell you she is NOT in New England!
It's all about Genetics..... do you remember from high school science class???
Yorkie pups are supposed to be born black. The only way a Yorkie will turn the blue color is if they are carrying the Graying gene (Blue gene) BB or Bb. If you have two dogs that both have Bb, and the bb(recessive genes) come together, then you get a dog that stays black. This can happen even if both dogs are blue. Any other combination of BB, Bb, bB, the dog will be a blue.Dogs that are born blue (silver or gray) carry the dilute gene of dd, which should NOT be in the Yorkshire Terrier breed because it causes the "Blue born puppy." It is a genetic mutation in color. I don't have any information on how the parents get it.
You will see people advertise "rare" silver colored yorkie. BEWARE....as these little puppies are prone to other health problems like skin issues, blindness, deafness and more. A silver yorkie should NEVER be used for breeding!! However, they can be a great pet!
More and more I am seeing "chocolate Yorkies' advertised. In this case the pups are not born black but all brown/tan like the inside of a reeces peanut butter cup. In this instance the Yorkie has an overload of red-gold and this is also a mutuation of the Yorkshire Breed. This pups have liver colored noses and eyes. If these pups are used for breeding, it can cause genetically, a loss of pigment altogether. AKC will register these puppies which may be contributing to out pouring of breedings for off colors. Please.........if you think you are interested in a yorkie that does not have the AKC Standard color, do your homework as you may be buying a pup that will end up with multiple health issues. Otherwise, they make great pets. It is so interesting!!! You can find other information on the internet under color genetics.

LIVER SHUNTS-POTENTIAL THREAT FOR YORKIES
A congenital liver shunt is a birth defect that can be deadly. While inutero, a vein that carries blood past the liver develops rather than circulating through the liver. The liver filters all of the impurities out of the blood stream in the puppy, and when a shunt develops, the blood bypasses the liver and these toxins remain in the bloodstream causing serious health problems for the pup. Cogenital shunts usually show signs before 6 months of age.
If your pup has any of these clinical symptoms, consult your vet right away. Blood tests will be run as well as a fasting bile acid test. Other diagnostics may be necessary as well.
Depending on the severity of the shunt, treatment may include a low protein diet and medication, but in more cases than not, surgery is needed to close the shunt. The surgery is very expensive and the outcome sometimes is not good.
Do your homework....check out the breeders reputation. Talk to previous clients or the breeders veterinarian. Ask if there has been any incidence of liver shunts. Nothing will be more heartbreaking than to bond with your little one only to possibly lose him/her just a few months later.
Aquired liver shunt usually shows up after the dog is more than a year old. Acquired LS is usually due to an underlying illness or other disease and is not usually a congenital or hereditary problem although it could be.
I hope this has helped you understand the problem. Lots of literature is available on the web including clubs and support groups as well.

KELSI HAD SURGERY
Kelsi will be 10 years old in April. My central Maine vet used to tell me....."why spay her...she is only 4 lbs and it puts her at too much risk..... she is so little the heats won't be bad...you don't have to spay her.........." so I didn't. I never intended on breeding her as again, I was told by my vet that she was too little. So breeding never crossed my mind. Little did I know that I put her at risk for something more potentially deadly. Here I am, learning something new every day!!
The surgery was slated for today. Dr. Hutchins assured me he would call immediately following the surgery and let me know how she did. What he found was a uterus and fallopian tubes full of a disease called closed pyometra. Her uterus and tubes weighed a full pound. Had the pyometra burst, Kelsi would have died within 24-48 hours. Luckily, Kelsi is fine and is home tonight recovering. She is being a real trooper and is resting.
I want to share with you about the disease, so those of you who have not spayed your older females may reconsider.
Pyometra is a uterine infection where the uterus fills with pus. Pyometra is common in unspayed dogs. It is a serious uterine infection that is potentially fatal. Pyometras can present as either open or closed. In the open form the cervix is open and there may be a foul smelling discharge. In the closed form, the cervix is closed so there will be no discharge. The closed pyometra is more difficult to diagnose and the animal usually will get very sick because the body is retaining the infection.
Symptoms may include, but are not limited to: smelly vaginal discharge, licking more, enlarged abdomen, vomiting, not eating, lethargy, drinking more, urinating more, and dehydration. If your dog displays these symptoms take her to the vet right away to be examined. If a closed pyometra ruptures, the dog will die within 24-48 hours. Open pyometra sometimes can be treated with IV antibiotics but usually will reoccur within one year. Spaying is the best option.
Kelsi will be on pain medication and antibiotics for a few days. Her staples will be removed in 7-10 days. In the meantime, I have fixed her a Queens bedroom in an oversized kennel in the dining room where she will rest, be fed rice, chicken, hamburg and anything else she wants until she is recouperated. I love Kelsi and could have possibly lost her had I not acted on my instincts. Did I take a chance on having a surgery performed like that? Yes this is some risk due to her age and potential complications........but in this case it was worth it!!! I want my first little yorkie to live to be 25!!!!
Hope this has enlightened some of you out there..........it was my lesson for the day!!!!! Holly

YORK COUNTY KENNEL CLUB
I want to talk about a local Club that I belong to. It's the York County Kennel Club and we meet every last Monday of the month at 7 pm at the Eldora Boston House located right beside the West Kennebunk Animal Shelter. To learn about their history and what they do, you can go to their website at http://www.yorkcountykennelclub.homestead.com/.
I joined the Club last year after attending an AKC point show that they were hosting at the Acton Fair Grounds. I had never been to a dog show and I was truly amazed!! I had never seen so many breeds of dogs in my life and many of them I had NO idea even what they were called. I was in wonder of all the activity, enthusiasm and knowledge there. Of course my focus was on the yorkies.........but there were many other show handlers and breeders there as well.
For the most part, people would speak with you, answer your questions and be friendly, however there also were those who were stowic, wouldn't even look at you or smile and kept to themselves. That's ok, as the tension and work being done is serious business for many. It could mean finishing a championship or earning points toward their championship to promote their lines and dogs. Either way, for me it was exciting and a BIG learning experience. I networked with a couple of Maine breeders but also with some from Connecticut and New York. Their dogs were absolutely beautiful in their show coats and more!! It was just like being at the Eukanuba Championship show for me!! (you can't tell I was excited!)
Anyway, I met this wonderful lady Charlotte M. Apparently she has been a member of the Club since it's inception. One thing led to another and I joined right on the spot. This group carrys a world of experience and knowledge and I value my membership with them. We not only work hard but we also have fun. I would encourage anyone that has a love for dogs to join. If I can sponsor you let me know.
The Club is holding some fundraisers coming up and here is a sneak preview. On 4/21/06 we are sponsoring an Antique Appraisal Day.....you know kinda of like what is on TV. You can bring one to three items and for a small fee get it appraised. The location will be announced. Watch in local papers and I will post it here. Also the next YCKC AKC Point Show will be held on May 5th and 6th at the Acton Fairgrounds. Save the date and come on out. You will not be disappointed.
On 3/25 There will be a "Meet the Breeds" Showcase at the Saco Recreation building. I am going to try to participate with my girls. Come on out for fun time and to see all the different kinds of dogs. As other activities develop. I will try to keep you posted.
Hope you have enjoyed this kind of information as well.....and maybe you will see me in the showring this year!! Holly

NEWBORN UPDATE
#1 girl now weighs 5 1/4 oz, up 1.5oz in 4 days, #2 girl 4 1/4 oz., up 1 1/8th oz, #3 girl 2.5oz, up 1/2oz and #4 girl 2 5/8 oz, up 1/2 oz.
The two teeney ones are not gaining allot but look stronger and seem healthy. We may not be out of the woods yet, but things look promising.
2 girls are sold already and we are hoping to be able to find wonderful homes for the other two tiny ones. We have been receiving many inquiries but just have not found the right homes yet.
Jazzy is being a wonderful mom and is soooooooo attentive. Of course I am spoiling her to death with lots of protein rich foods and catering to her every need. Having little baby yorkies is lots of work and stressful at times, but for me, it could not be more rewarding or it could not make me more proud.
I truly am blessed to have such wonderful furbabies and so much unconditional love around me. If you feel you are missing something in your life..... maybe it is a yorkie. They can fill any void you may have and love you more than you ever thought yourself deserving. Have a wonderful night. Holly

X-RAY JAZZYS BOODA BELLY
As all of you know if you have been reading my blog, Jazzy is due in just 3 more days. I have been concerned about the size of her belly and how many babies she might be carrying. We had her checked a few weeks ago but couldn't tell. Well finally the day arrived for another x-ray and here it is!!! It is easy to see the 4 round little heads toward the bottom of her belly.........but look out. Up where that pollywog shaped dark area is there is another one!!! 5 babies!!!! We could not believe it!!! This is her first litter and she was only bred one day. We never would have dreamed for five!!! HOLY BELLY NELLIE! So we are impatiently waiting for the big moment. We are all prepared with everything we may need from gauze sponges to baby bottle and newborn milk to having our vet on call. Wish us luck and pray that Jazzy has live births, healthy pups and no complications! We will keep you posted. HollyFriday, January 12, 2007

WONDERFUL HOMES
Each and every one of our pups is special to us, and it is with the utmost care that we select their new parents. Yes, I said we select them. I have had many inquiries and if you don't meet our requirements then we don't sell the pup. Why? Because we want our babies to have wonderful homes with the right type of environment, as well as we select homes that will spay/neuter in most cases. No puppy mills, no pet shops and no breeders unless you meet our approval.
We recently had a woman from our area call and want to buy a pup. She told me she wanted to breed a litter. I asked her what she had for a male. She told me her male weighed 12, yes I said twelve pounds!!! I told her straight up ....NO WAY!! Our dogs are bred within the standard of 4-7 lbs. There is no way I would sell our little girls to a breeder with a 12 lb male!!!
Last week I was at the vets with a couple of my dogs. They told me again, how much they loved our dogs. They were so pleased with the fact that we breed within the standard and that our dogs are so well cared for. They told me that most of the yorkies they see are huge! 10-13 lbs and of course yorkies are supposed to weigh between 4-7lbs. I harp on this subject all of the time. When you register your dogs with the AKC, it's like taking an oath in my eyes. Breed within the standard and to better the breed. Breeding these large dogs is NOT bettering the breed. Spay/neuter these precious yorkies that have poor confirmation and are too large to be within the standard. Do the breed a favor!! Don't breed just for the money!
Yesterday I was asked why I don't allow full breeding rights with what I charge. NOPE-NO WAY!!! I see ads all the time for poor confirmation -10 lb yorkies for almost the same money. I am talking $100-200....and the best part is we pay YOU to spay/neuter with our rebates. I have made a solid commitment to my dogs and I will not sway. So we might do something different from other backyard breeders in the area? Yes we do.........but it is worth it! Would we sell a pup with full registration at some point......absolutely....as long as the circumstances are right and we approve it. It would also be a pup that we believe has all the attributes it needs to fit within the standard or show potential. I would love to find some homes of people who want to show. Don't hesitate to talk with us....ever. We are reasonable people....but dont be surprised either if we say NO DEAL!!! (I love that show!)
New puppies coming soon...now within 7 days. We are soooooooooooo excited!! Have a great day! Holly

DESIGNER OR MUTTS?
It used to be that crosses between AKC dogs were considered mistakes. We called them mutts, Heinz 57's, mongrels and more. But over the last 5 years, but more prevalent the last 2, these cross breeds have become so ever popular. Even movie stars are buying them and flauting them on National TV. We are forever hearing about Labradoodles, Yorkiepoo's, Shizpoo's, puggles, shorkies and more.
One has to wonder why this has become such the rage and such the craze.......
Do you realize that these designer dogs even have their own registering organization like AKC? It's called the American Canine Hybrid Club. My understanding is that they are registering over 500, yes I said FIVE HUNDRED litters per month!!!!
It has been reported by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association that the "number or mutts grew by ONE MILLION to THIRTY-ONE MILLION dogs in the last 5 years." It blows my mind!!!
Many reports indicate that there are more of these "designer dogs" turned into shelters than ever before. Puppy mills are producing pups faster than they can sell them. Many of these poor little God's creatures are ending up not placed in loving homes.
There are also many reports regarding the cross breeding of these dogs and the physical and medical problems arising. Two reports I read talked about the Puggles. This is a cross between a pug and beagle. Apparently they are prone to having their eyes pop out onto their cheeks due to the type of eye socket they produce! I can't even imagine..............!!!!! A very informative article was produced by Jessica Fischer puplished on 06/24/06. You can look it up on the web. The title is "Designer Dogs: Fashionable hybrids may face problems later."
Yes I understand that may breeds are prone to different hereditary and genetic problems, but why breed dogs if one is going to ignore all the literature. As a responsible breeder, I try to breed within the standard. I try to better the breed. I try to make sure that all of my pups go to loving homes and if for some reason they cannot stay with their new parents, the pup/dog MUST come back to me. I screen all of the inquiries that come into me regarding my puppies. I never ever want one of my pups to end up in a puppy mill.
Just yesterday I was speaking with an associate yorkie breeder. She commented that Maine was a HUGE PUPPY MILL STATE!!! I never thought that....but it made me stop and think.
I love Yorkshire Terriers. I love the BREED! Anyone that has owned a yorkie knows what I am talking about. They steal your heart, they become a HUGE part of your life, and they love you unconditionally. Their beauty and loyalty surpasses all other breeds in my eyes.
For those of you out there breeding 8-14 pound yorkies, chocolates, and cross breeding I have a question for you............... Can you honestly say you love yorkies? Can you look at yourself in the mirror and say that when you bought your first AKC registered baby yorkie that you committed to breed within the standard and to improve it? Can you honestly look into the heavens and tell God that you are breeding to share your love for these dogs....or is it for the money???
My dear readers........Help me keep the breed what it is supposed to be..........true full bred, AKC registered Yorkshire Terriers, bred within the standard set forth by AKC. Help me put the puppy mills out of business and help those who care as I, to shame these breeders that breed outside the standard. We together can stop this maddness of designer dogs by boycotting the purchase of them. That will slow them down.............no demand..............no need for supply.
If I have hit a nerve on this subject, my apologies. This is just my opinion, and I welcome yours.

MONSTER CHILDREN
I gathered them up and put them into the playpen. I have approximately a 6 x 10 area gated off where they can play. They have such cute little personalities now. Their little butts wiggle 90 miles an hour, they hop and jump, they yip and attack your feet.........."my little monster children" I say as I give them a hug and a little pat on the head and back. Well I might as well put the other two into play as well. They have such fun together wrestling and exploring.
Then out I go to the living room to hunt out the treasure..........yep...lots of treasures!!! Have a wonderful day...........I have to go and make some wash water.......hehe
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
I can think of many friends and families who were not as fortunate as I, as saddness and misfortune went their way this past year. My heart is heavy for those associates and I can only pray that 2007 will bring uplifting days and healing for them.
I was watching the ball drop in New York City last night at the hour struck 12. What does this mean to most people....?? New beginnings? Hope? Love? The end of the war? What ever it may be, and whatever 2007 may bring..........It is a wonderful day when the sun comes up and new day has begun. I thank God for this and pray that everyone has a wonderful, happy, prosperous and healthful New Year. Taylor Made Yorkies

JAZZY STAR UPDATE

Jazzy loves to ride so going to see the doctor was a big treat for her. Only 10 minutes away from where I live, we arrived. She looked at me to say.......we are here already!!! Not fair!!!
We went in and Doc checked her all over from top to bottom. "Yep......she is pregnant alright!" "Well ya!........I already knew that! Tell me more........is she ok. Look at that Booda!!" He asked me if I was sure about the breeding date. I told him yes, November 14th. There was only one tie. Doc says, "well lets fire up the xray and see what we can see........no sense doing an ultrasound, we will only hear heartbeats with that."
A few minutes later he came in and hung the photo. I really couldn't see much, not like the other xrays I have had done after the 53 day mark.
He said, "Well I really thought you were going to be wrong on the date of breeding. She looks almost like she could deliver, but where she still has 20 days to go, you can see the bone structures are there but not calcified or we could see them by now. See right here, and here, and here....I think these are puppies........and we can't see what might be on the other side or in back of these. It looks like at least 3 to me.........but we will be able to tell more once the bone matures. You would be surprised how just in 20 more days how the bone will thicken and we will then be able to see what is going on. I was hoping we would see more...but we can't. I want you to bring her back on the friday before she is due so we can see what we are going to be up against for the weekend.........just in case!" "Holly she is fine...but we might be looking at a large litter for this little girl!"
Darn...nothing confirmed...for sure! But it looks like she will have at least 3 pups....my poor little Jazzy....leave it to her to have a huge litter for her first. Am I still worried???.......yes a little, but I feel better just knowing that her HUGE BOODA is babies and not an unsuspected infection or something. I just pray all her tiny babies are healthy and she has a smooth delivery.
Knowing a little or too much is sometimes dangerous. Being a registered nurse I think of all the things that might go wrong. On top of that, I heard of a little dog that was bred. The owner wanted to "save money" and did not come in after the 53 day mark to have an x-ray as the doctor recommended. The dog came due for delivery......no delivery...Several days after the suspected due date, the little dog became sick and then the owner decided to take her little dog to the vets. They did an xray. What it showed was one live puppy...overgrown to the point that the dog could never have it naturally and one mummified pup rotting in the little dogs womb. They had to perform an emergency C-section, however, the little mom dog died after a few hours post surgery. Her little body had been poisoned from the rotting fetus. A day or so later the one live pup also died. Now this owner lost both her little female dog and her new puppy. Was it worth saving those few dollars? Is $55.00 well spent for an x-ray to KNOW what you and your little female is up against???? Darn right it is...............I will never deny my puppies big or small vet care. I don't care what it costs. It is my responsibility to make sure they are safe and they have what they need. I have said before and will say it again........I breed Yorkies and it's not about the money. It's the love for the breed, and the love for all of my Yorkie family that keeps me going. These dogs are my babies, my family and a huge part of my life. There are many breeders out there that cannot "honestly" make that statement. Damn you puppy mills! and shame on you.......backyard wanna make a dollar breeders.
I will keep you updated on Jazzy's progress. She is due Jan. 16th and we expect a big litter of tinies. Holly

BROKEN HEARTS-YORKIES LOST
All of the crime and horror going on today has pushed us into being a non-trusting individuals. We lock our houses, we install security systems, we lock our cars, we buy guard dogs. Does any of this help???
We have heard about people leaving their people baby or small child in the car, and the car being stolen with the child inside. More recently we heard about a newborn being taken from a new mom's home. The mom was slashed and left for dead in her own house. What is happening in our world that our safe haven, (our home) is no longer safe? The hazards out there are eminent. Think about the following and consider it all. It could happen to you!!
1. Believe me when I tell you that there is a black market. Little dogs are being stolen every day and sold for drug money or any money that they can get. I have heard of little dogs being stolen out of cars too. Lock your car doors if you have to leave your dog in it. NEVER put your dog outside without supervision, on or off the leash. It only takes a second. Lock your door at your home. My dear friend and web editor lost her yorkie right out of her yard. It only took a second to disappear and the future only brings wondering what ever happened, if he is ok or worse yet, dead.
2. Wild animals attack small dogs for food. Fox, coyote's, coy dogs, fisher cats, bobcats, mountain lions to name a few. Large hawks and eagles are preditors of your little puppies or small dogs. Again, NEVER put your dog outside alone on or off a leash. Even if you have a fenced in yard...these animals can dig their way in and be waiting and hiding for quick lunch. I have heard stories about people hiking out to the eagles next near the old FayScot machine tool place. What they found was a barage of little collars and leashes at the base of the pole.
A woman in Biddeford lost her small dog right off her front porch. She had him leashed out and the dog disappeared. They followed the trail and found the poor dog dead. A fisher cat had hauled him off and buried him just a few hundred yards away from her house. He was coming back to have lunch later.
3. Internet sales or scams. Be sure to check references if you are buying a puppy from another state or off the internet. There are tons of scammers out there. (article posted on my website) You can end up sending your hard earned money to someone who will never send you your pup. Beware!!! The other thing is to really check and I mean really check on what you are buying. Ask for new pictures. Ask to speak to their veterinarian. Ask for references of people who purchased their dog from another State. People tell you things that are not true. Yes I bought some of my dogs on the internet. I can tell you honestly, that 2 out of 4 gave us false information either regarding confirmation or size. Oh don't get me wrong....I would not give my babies up for anything now, but it is disheartening.
4. Falls. Little dogs will fall or jump from high places. We had a family that bought one of our past babies who lost a yorkie when it fell off a bench and hit it's head. Never leave your baby unattended on the couch or anywhere that is higher than they are. This same family lost another one when it ran into the road and was hit. Always put a leash on your pup when taking it outside. Especially when they are just learning commands. They can get distracted easily and bolt for the street. My mom and dad just told me that on the Corinna road a little yorkie ran from a driveway and was in the road, confused and scared. Thank God the man in front of them leaped from his car and grabbed the little guy before he was hit. The car's behind my parents didn't even wait, they just tried to pass both cars and did not even know what was going on.
5. Unknown....puppies chew. They can get sick for reasons we don't know. They can die from respiratory failure due to aspirating vomit, they can just get sick for no reason. Be aware of their behavior...keep a thermometer on hand. A regular rectal one works well. Normal temp is between 100 -103. If above that...call your vet. Diarrhea lasting more than a day. Call your vet. Not eating....call your vet. These little guys are so vulnerable and are at your mercy.
Knowing is half the battle. HOlly

We are EXPECTING again.

Whenever one of your Yorkies comes into heat, the delema begins...to breed or not to breed. Once you decide, then you wonder if you will have a successful breeding.
Jazzy had her 3rd heat in November and we decided to try to breed her. Being what I call a tiny, (4 lbs) she is a bit smaller than my male (4.5 lbs) and the difficulty began. Truly she was a frustrated woman but we finally had one successful tie on Nov 14th. Now the waiting game.......
It is difficult to know if you have had a successful breeding unless you have an ultrasound. They are expensive and really all you can find out is that there are heartbeats. It does not tell you how many puppies in most cases. Because of this, we wait until 53 days have passed and then do an x-ray. The x-ray will give you an indication of size but most of all tells you how many pups you have.
Counting the days of gestation, which is around 63 days, Jazzy is 37 days into her term. Last weekend we noticed her belly was a bit rounder than usual. She is showing other signs of pregnancy for example, her little tits are pink and when you rub her belly she squeeks, and she has a ravanous appetite. It also seems like when a yorkie is expecting their belly emits lots of heat. At least this is what we have found.
Yesterday I noticed her belly feels and looks like it has doubled in size. I noticed she even had a little trouble manipulating the steps outside. My little Jaz is absolutely expecting! I will keep a close eye on her. One always worrys about miscarriage, fever etc. and I have already scheduled her appointment. I did feel a pups roll last evening too. No little kicks yet but definintely something moving.
Looks like we will have a litter of tinys very soon.......now I go back to being the worrysome mom-owner. These dogs are my babies and I will be very cautious. Being a nurse I know all the things that can go wrong.....sometimes that is worse!! Thank goodness for Dr Doug and his expertise.......wiill keep you posted.

Surrogate mom
Delia's baby has been really whiney and crying allot because mom is not spending every waking moment in the whelping box anymore, so..hmmmm, I thought Tia would stimulate Delia's baby to play more, (she was sleeping all the time when she wasn't crying), it would give her company so she would not be as lonely, and Tia would get more to eat. So in she went. It was the cutest thing...Tia immediately started playing with her new foster sister and Delia, being so loving immediately cleaned her up and let her nurse. The rest is history. I have to smile when I look at them. A little while ago, Delia was laying in the box and there on either side of her head curled up was the two babies. Of course my camera was not available. It never is when you need it!! It is just amazing to me that Delia was this receptive. She is such a loving mom!!
Lib on the other hand really could care less. She still has the other 3 that attack her when she gets in the box...lol.
Now at least I know that Delia could make a really good foster mom if we should ever need it. Not all dogs are receptive to this. The life and times of Yorkshire Terriers.......I love it!

I have to apologize for not doing anything on here. But those of who know, work, home and dogs seem to take up all the time and there is never enough hours in the day. But here I am, ready to update you. The puppies are growing sooooooooo fast. We still have Tiny Tia available...although I want to wait a bit longer to see how she grows. She is a fiesty little one...a pound and 2 oz right now. She is eating mush and playing hard and loves attention. She has the sweetest face. When we get ready, she will be $1500.00
We also have Delia's baby girl available. She looks just like a teddy bear with the short nose and the tiny ears. I have a feeling she is going to be a real looker and won't be surprised if she is show quality. I again want to wait a few more weeks to see her progression. It's still hard to tell at this point. I am thinking $1300 right now. Don't hesitate to call and talk if you have questions. We have lots invested in our dogs and all are special. I know you won't be disappointed either.
The three other puppies are sold. Toby, the little boy is going to a couple in Portland Maine. They have come to visit and they just love him. Maddie, the biggest pup and first born is going to a family in Central Maine. She will have a 9 year boy to love and play with her.
Last but not least is Emma. She is going to live with Judy, my dear friend and website manager in Dexter, Maine. Emma is a doll and of course I will get to see her occasionally. We are all excited about our potential new homes and moms and dads.
